AJ Coulter

Contemporary romance author

I write contemporary romance for readers who like their characters grown-up, complicated and very much themselves. I’m interested in people with full lives, strong opinions and enough history behind them to make love inconvenient rather than inevitable. My stories tend to be sharp, intimate and grounded in the small details that make attraction feel real. I like humour, tension, confidence, contradiction and characters who do not need saving.

My Story

I’m a screen-first storyteller writing contemporary romance about complicated adults, hidden lives and the difference between being seen and being truly known.

My stories begin visually. I see scenes before I see paragraphs — the room, the movement, the expression on someone’s face, the touch of a hand, the silence between two lines of dialogue. Characters arrive as fully formed people with histories, contradictions and voices of their own, and the story develops around what I can already see and hear playing out in my head.

That instinct shapes both the stories I write and the way I write them.

I’m drawn to accomplished adults who have already built full lives before love arrives and disrupts the architecture. My characters have careers, friendships, histories, private selves and carefully constructed ideas about who they are. Falling in love does not complete them. It changes the equation.

My fiction is character-driven, emotionally direct and highly visual. I’m interested in chemistry that develops through conversation as much as attraction, in intimacy built through the small things people notice about one another, and in the parts of ourselves we protect even from the people closest to us.

I like contradictions: confidence and vulnerability, independence and intimacy, public success and private uncertainty. My characters are allowed to be intelligent, sexual, difficult, funny, successful and imperfect — often all at once.

Music, cities, travel and the spaces people inhabit run through my stories, not simply as settings but as part of who my characters are. A concert can change the direction of a night. A boardroom can become intensely personal. An apartment can reveal things its owner would never say aloud.

My creative process is also a little different from traditional novel writing.

I develop my characters, relationships, plots, scenes, dialogue, emotional beats and visual direction in detail, often working through a story much like a screen treatment. I then use AI as a drafting tool to help translate that cinematic material into novel prose.

The draft is only the beginning.

I edit heavily, rewriting dialogue, restructuring scenes, changing pacing, removing anything that feels artificial and rejecting anything that does not sound or behave like the characters I created. Nothing reaches the published book simply because a tool produced it. The final story has to match the one I see and hear in my head.

For me, AI is not where the story comes from. It is part of the process of moving a story from one medium to another: from the screen in my head to the page in the reader’s hands.

Above all, I write about people who already know how to stand on their own, discovering what it means to make room for somebody else.

I write under the name AJ Coulter.
